Blatten, Lotschental Valley, Canton Valais, Switzerland - 29 Photos
Blatten, (it was and I believe it will be again) a wonderful corner of Switzerland, in the Lotschental Valley, in the Canton of Valais, which I visited in 2013, in truth it is not on the list of the most beautiful villages in Switzerland, even if it would have fully deserved it, I nevertheless decided to publish the photos I took with good reason, because after a disastrous landslide of millions of cubic meters of ice, earth and rock material that occurred on May 28, 2025, it destroyed 90% of the Village! the landslide blocked the Lonza River that flows through it, and caused the formation of a lake, there were immediate fears that the water could overflow into the valley causing further disasters, fortunately after a couple of days the Lonza River made its way through the debris, flowing back downstream and the situation was resolved.
Fortunately, there was only one victim, as in the days leading up to the disaster, there were the first signs of a disaster with small landslides, and the authorities decided to evacuate all residents.
Now, the situation in Blatten is wavering between desolation and a desire for rebirth and optimism, Mayor Matthias Bellwald spreads hope and optimism.
This tragedy has touched me deeply, having been there and met some of the people who lived there, it's a wonderful, peaceful, and human-scale place, i wish all its residents and the authorities a rebirth even more beautiful than before, i realize it's a huge challenge, but I trust in everyone's resilience. Blatten, (era e credo che lo sarà di nuovo) un angolo stupendo della Svizzera, nella Valle di Lotschental, nel Cantone Vallese, da me visitato nel 2013, in verità non è nella lista dei più belli Villaggi della Svizzera, anche se l'avrebbe ampiamente meritato, ho comunque deciso di pubblicare le foto da me fatte a ragion veduta, perchè dopo una disastrosa frana di milioni di metri cubi di ghiaccio, terra e materiale roccioso avvenuta il 28 maggio 2025, ha distrutto il 90 % del Villaggio !, la frana ha ostruito il fiume Lonza che lo attraversa, ed ha provocato la formazione di un lago, si è subito temuto che l'acqua potesse tracimare a valle provocando altri disastri, per fortuna dopo un paio di giorni il fiume Lonza si è fatto largo tra i detriti scorrendo di nuovo verso valle e la situazione si è sistemata.
Fortunatamente c'è stata solamente una vittima, perchè nei giorni antecedenti il disastro ci sono state le prime avvisaglie con piccole frane e le autorità hanno deciso di evacuare tutti gli abitanti.
Ora la situazione di Blatten è altalenante tra desolazione e desiderio di rinascita e ottimismo, il sindaco Matthias Bellwald diffonde speranza e ottimismo.
Questa tragedia personalmente mi ha toccato molto, essendoci stato e aver conosciuto alcune persone, un luogo stupendo, tranquillo, vivibile a misura d'uomo, auguro a tutti i suoi abitanti e alle autorità di rinascere ancora più bello di prima, mi rendo conto che è una sfida enorme ma confido nella resilienza di tutti, tanti auguri di cuore a tutti.
