Fenestrelle Fortress, Turin, Piedmont - 48 Photos
The Fenestrelle Fortress is located in Val Chisone, Piedmont, Province of Turin, built between 1728 and 1850, it is a huge military defensive complex, unique in Europe for its characteristics, also called the great Italian wall, the fifth oldest military construction in terms of length (3Km.) after Lucca 4.2 Km., Nicosia 4.5 Km., Genoa 19 Km and of course the Great Wall of China; 122 years were spent on its construction, it has a covered staircase composed of 4000 steps, a total difference in height of 635 meters, 7 redoubts, 14 connecting bridges, 28 projections and a total surface area of 1,300,000 square meters.
Its stairways connect three military constructions: the Forte San Carlo at the base, the Forte Tre Denti in an intermediate position and the Forte delle Valli, the last bastion located at a height of 1800 m., all three include within them powder magazines, redoubts and gun ports, grandiose articulations of this enormous complex, born with the function of protecting the Franco-Piedmontese border, in reality it was never involved in important sieges or attacks in force, it was instead the protagonist of some minor skirmishes during the Second World War. After a long period of abandonment from 1946 to 1990, a recovery project was started, still ongoing, which opened it to tourism, latest data in 2019 it was visited by over 34,000 visitors, thanks to the Progetto San Carlo Association, the Fenestrelle Fort can be visited by paying an entrance fee, with three types of route, 1) The Royal Walk (the most challenging about 7 hours) starting in the morning at 9 am and returning in the late afternoon, covering all 3 km of the route; 2) Journey inside the Walls, lasting about 3, a reduced version with a visit to the San Carlo Fort, its Palaces and Underground, part of the Covered Staircase up to an altitude of 1400 m. to admire the panoramic point of the Devil's Watchtower; 3) for those who have little time about an hour, you only visit the Forte San Carlo, the Piazza d'Armi with the Palaces and the annexed Museum, the Church, and the western pincers that frame it.
Since 1999 it has become the symbol of the Province of Turin and subsequently in 2007 the World Monuments Fund included it in the list of the 100 historical-archaeological sites of global importance most at risk, it certainly deserves a visit, it is really worth it, I have been there several times and I am always surprised to see it, an immense cyclopean work, thanks for reading me, dear Greetings.

La Fortezza di Fenestrelle si trova in Val Chisone, Piemonte, Provincia di Torino, costruita tra il 1728 e il 1850, si tratta di un enorme complesso difensivo militare, unico in Europa per le sue caratteristiche, chiamata anche la grande muraglia Italiana, la quinta costruzione militare più antica in termini di lunghezza ( 3Km.) dopo Lucca 4.2 Km., Nicosia 4.5 Km., Genova 19 Km e naturalmente la Grande Muraglia Cinese; per la sua costruzione sono stati impiegati 122 anni , possiede una scala coperta composta da 4000 gradini, dislivello totale 635 metri, 7 ridotte, 14 ponti di collegamento, 28 risalti e una superfice totale di 1.300.000 metri quadrati di superfice.
Le sue scalinate congiungono tre costruzioni militari : il Forte San Carlo alla base, il Forte Tre Denti in posizione intermedia e il Forte delle Valli ultimo baluardo posto ad una altezza di 1800 m., tutti e tre includono al loro interno polveriere, ridotte e cannoniere, grandiose articolazioni di questo enorme complesso, nato con funzione di protezione del confine Franco-Piemontese, in realtà non fu mai coinvolta in importanti assedi o attacchi in forze, fu invece protagonista di alcune schermaglie minori durante la seconda guerra mondiale.
Dopo un lungo periodo di abbandono dal 1946 al 1990, è stato iniziato un progetto di recupero, tuttora in corso che l'ha aperta al turismo, ultimi dati nel 2019 è stata visitata da oltre 34000 visitatori, grazie all'Associazione Progetto San Carlo, il Forte di Fenestrelle è visitabile con pagamento di un biglietto d'ingresso, con tre tipologie di percorso, 1) La Passeggiata Reale ( la più impegnativa circa 7 ore) con partenza al mattino ore 9 e rientro nel tardo pomeriggio, percorrendo tutti i 3 Km. di percorso; 2) Viaggio dentro le Mura, dalla durata di circa 3, una versione ridotta con visita al Forte San Carlo, i suoi Palazzi e Sotterranei, parte della Scala Coperta fino a quota 1400 m. per ammirare il punto panoramico della Garitta del Diavolo; 3) per chi ha poco tempo un'ora circa, si visita solo il Forte San Carlo, la Piazza d'Armi con i Palazzi e Museo annesso, la Chiesa, e le tenaglie occidentali che fanno da cornice.
Dal 1999 è diventata il simbolo della Provincia di Torino e a seguire nel 2007 il World Monuments Fund l'ha inserita nella lista dei 100 siti storico-archeologici di rilevanza mondiale più a rischio, merita certamente una visita, ne vale veramente la pena, io ci sono stato più volte e sempre mi sorprendo nel vederla, opera ciclopica immensa, grazie per leggermi, cari Saluti.
