The Sacra di San Michele (or Abbey of San Michele), dedicated to the cult of the Archangel Michael, is located in the lower Susa Valley, in the Province of Turin, Piedmont, Italy, in the municipality of Chiusa San Michele and along the Via Francigena along the Susa Valley via Colle del Moncenisio, construction began in the 10th century on Mount Pirchiriano, 960 meters above sea level, 40 km from Turin.
This grandiose abbey complex is one of the largest religious buildings in this Alpine corner. It belongs to the diocese of Susa, built in Romanesque-Gothic style, it houses numerous important religious paintings depicting the Madonna, Jesus, and Saint Michael, members of the royal family of the House of Savoy are buried here, for many centuries, it became one of the main centers of Benedictine spirituality in Italy. In the 19th century, the Rosminian Fathers settled here.
The Sacra di San Michele is part of a pilgrimage route over 2,000 km long, stretching from Mont Saint-Michel in France to Monte Sant’Angelo in Puglia, it is recognized and declared a symbol of Piedmont, it is not yet a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but is on the home stretch, being part of the nomination process along with other Benedictine abbeys.
In recent years, it has seen particular and generous attention from public and private entities to protect and enhance the monument, ensuring essential restoration work by the competent state authorities.
Its history, spiritual value, and the surrounding landscape make the Sacra a draw for visitors from all over Europe: pilgrims, believers, and tourist.
From wherever you look, it stands out majestically over the entire Susa Valley, and it seems impossible that any human mind could have conceived the idea of building such a grandiose complex up there so close to the heavens. It is certainly worth a visit.

La Sacra di San Michele (o Abbazia di San Michele) dedicata al culto dell'Arcangelo Michele, si trova nella bassa Valle di Susa, in Provincia di Torino, Piemonte, Italia, nel Comune di Chiusa San Michele e lungo il percorso della Via Francigena lungo la Valle di Susa Via Colle del Moncenisio, inizio della costruzione nel X Secolo sul monte Pirchiriano a 960 m. s.l.m. a 40 Km da Torino.
Si tratta di un grandioso complesso abbaziale, è una delle più grandi architetture religiose di questo angolo alpino, appartiene alla diocesi di Susa, costruita in stile romanico gotico, ospita al suo interno numerose importanti opere pittoriche religiose riguardanti la Madonna, Gesù e San Michele, quì sono sepolti i membri della famiglia reale di Casa Savoia per molti secoli divenne uno dei principali centri della spiritualità Benedettina in Italia, nel XIX Secolo si insediano i padri Rosminiani.
La Sacra di San Michele s’inserisce all’interno di una via di pellegrinaggio lunga oltre 2000 km che va da Mont Saint-Michel in Francia, a Monte Sant’Angelo, in Puglia, è riconosciuta e dichiarata come simbolo del Piemonte, non è ancora bene UNESCO ma è in dirittura di arrivo, facente parte della candidatura insieme ad altre abbazie Benedettine.
Attualmente vede negli ultimi anni una attenzione particolare e generosa da enti pubblici e privati a tutela e valorizzazione del monumento garantendo gli indispensabili interventi di restauro da parte degli organi statali competenti.
La sua storia, il valore spirituale e il paesaggio che la circonda rendono la Sacra una meta di richiamo per visitatori da tutta Europa: pellegrini, fedeli, turisti.
Da qualsiasi parte la si ammiri spicca per imponenza su tutta la Valle di Susa e sembra impossibile che mente umana abbia concepito l'idea di costruire un tale grandioso complesso lassù così vicino al cielo, merita certamente una visita.
